Catalina Island: California's Only Island Resort

  • Posted on

Just 26 miles off the coast of Orange County lies the quaint Mediterranean charm of Avalon on the island of Santa Catalina.  For something truly unique, plan a day trip to this amazing, often overlooked, jewel of Southern California.

Start off early in the morning from our place for the 15 mile drive to Newport Beach where you'll catch the Catalina Flyer at 9am for your 1-hour cruise across the Pacific Ocean to the magical island of Santa Catalina.  Spend the day exploring the oceanfront shops, dining at beachfront restaurants, taking a zipline from the mountains to the sea, kayaking the coastline or taking a glass-bottom boat to discover the crystal clear waters that make Catalina a premium diving and snorkeling destination, or taking in a tour or hike of the island's vast interior where you can discover island buffalo and the tiny native fox.  It's a truly unique experience, and much of it can be done in a day from our place, returning on the 4:30pm Catalina Flyer out of Avalon.

There are different ways to get to Catalina (including quick helicopter flights) but most people take the Catalina Flyer out of Newport Beach.  You can visit their website at https://catalinainfo.com.  You may or may not be able to use the promo code CAT10 to receive $10 off per person on your trip.  Give it a try and let me know if the code works for you or not (It was good as of the beginning of July 2022).
